Greek Fotini Pazartzi new President of the HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE of the UNITED NATIONS!

On March 1, 2021, Ms. Fotini Pazartzi was elected the new Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations. Her term of office will be two years (from 01.03.21 – 28.02.23) and she will succeed in the Presidency of the Commission Mr. Ahmed Fathalla of Egyptian origin.

Ms. Fotini Pazartzi was born on June 28, 1959, in Athens. He studied at the Department of Public Law of the Law School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (1981). She holds a Master of Arts (D.E.A.) degree in International Law from the University of Paris-II (1983), as well as a PhD (Doctorat d’Etat en droit) from the same university.

She is a professor of International Law at the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Since 2019 she is President of the Department of International Studies of the school and coordinator of the postgraduate program of International and European Studies. Since 2015, whenever she was established, she is the Director of the research center of international law “Athens PIL” of the Athens Law School.

In 2014, she was elected a member of the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations, the body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). She was re-elected in 2018 for a second term, while in 2019 she was named Vice President.

Since September 2019 she is President of the European Society of International Law (ESIL). She is also the President of the International Law Association – Greek branch of the International Law Association. She is also a member of the Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations, the Societe francaise pour le droit international and the American Society of International Law.

She has also served as:

-Rapporteur of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (on Follow-Up to Views) (2017-2018)
-Chairman of the Working Group of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights for the Rules of Procedure (2016-2018)
-Visiting Partner at the Lauterpacht Research Center for International Law, University of Cambridge (1998)
-Director of Studies of the French Department of Public International Law at the Academy of International Law in The Hague (2003)
-Member of the Greek Delegation to the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations (1998-2008)
-Member of the Hellenic Committee for the Implementation and Dissemination of International Humanitarian Law
-Rapporteur of the Scientific Council of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2005-2006)
-Member of the Hellenic Citizenship Council (2009-)
-She has been invited to teach or give lectures at the Universities of Bordeaux (1993), Vienna (1998), Paris-I (2003), Paris-II (2004), Oxford (2008)

She is fluent in English and French and speaks Italian. She is the author of numerous articles, monographs and books in Greek, English, as well as in French.

Ms. Pazartzi is an excellent lawyer with a diverse and multidimensional scientific background, who with her many years of dedication to the academic and research field of international law, but also with her many years of service in important international positions, is sure to contribute to the development. but also in upgrading the operation of this international body.
