VASSILIS CHIRDARIS CURRICULUM VITAE

Attorney of the Supreme Court. He is a member of the Athens Bar Association.

For almost six years he has been a member of: a) the Supreme Court of Cassation; b) the Supreme Court of the Mith Court (Special Courts of Supreme Court dealing with cases of maladministration of judges and salary differences between the latter and the state); and c) Supreme Disciplinary Board of Lawyers.

He has also served as a Special Secretary of the Union of Greek Criminologists, he is a member of the Association of Greek Criminologists, of the Criminal Law Company and the Association of Criminologists and Associated Lawyers. He has also served as a member of Inquiry Committees for the introduction of Judges and Prosecutors at the Judicial Academy and the Examination Counsel of Trainee Lawyers in order to obtain a Lawyer’s License.

Since 2006 he is a member of the Editorial Committee of the scientific legal journal “NOMIKO VIMA” issued by the Athens Bar Association.

He has expertise in human rights, and in particular in the European Convention of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights and in criminal law. He has published many articles in Greek and in many foreign legal journals and books (in Greek and in English) related to individual rights, the functioning and presentation of the ECtHR, the interpretation of the ECHR and other international human rights treaties, .a., comments and remarks regarding the decisions of the Greek Supreme, Greek and foreign criminal courts, the ECtHR and the ICPD Committee. He has presented studies on the above issues in many conferences, has repeatedly commented on newspapers, television and radio stations in Greece and abroad, decisions of Greek and international courts and has taught in various seminars on criminal law and human rights issues.

He has also been a member of Legislative Committees, including the Argyropoulos Committee for the Improvement of Criminal Law and the Manoledaki Committee for the drafting of a new Penal Code, which was completed, published in a book and presented before the Ministry of Justice. He was also the author of the online edition regarding the rights of defendants in Greece, part of a larger project undertaken by the CCBE on behalf of the European Union for the electronic registration of defendants’ rights in all countries.

As a lawyer he ad many serious and important cases both at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and before the Greek criminal courts. Many of these cases draw the attention of the Greek and international public opinion.
